Weekly “what are you reading” Thread :marseyreading:

So you can discuss your weekly readings.

I’m still reading Moby Dic, currently halfway through, so far is great, though as English is not my native language It means I have to look up quite a bit in the dictionary to learn the “old timey” words, but I’m using it less now the more I learn, it also made me check up the Bible to find the biblical counterparts of the characters with biblical names, which is interesting.

The bestselling author of “Eat, Pray, Love” is indefinitely delaying the publication of her new book set in the Russian province of Siberia following backlash from Ukrainian readers, she announced on social media Monday morning.

Elizabeth Gilbert said she is halting publication of her novel, "The Snow Forest," originally slated to publish in February 2024, after receiving "an enormous, massive outpouring of reactions and responses from my Ukrainian readers expressing anger, sorrow, disappointment, and pain about the fact that I would choose to release a book into the world right now — any book, no matter what the subject of it is — that is set in Russia."

"I want to say that I have heard these messages, have read these messages and I respect them. And as a result I'm making a course correction and removing the book from its publication schedule," she continued.

"It is not the time for this book to be published. And I do not want to add any harm to a group of people who have already experienced, and are continuing to experience, grievous and extreme harm," Gilbert added.

Gilbert described the novel as “set in the middle of Siberia in the middle of the last century and told the story of a group of individuals who made a decision to remove themselves from the society to resist the Soviet government and to try to defend nature against industrialization.”

...

Though Gilbert's announcement doesn't mention them specifically, more than 500 reviewers appear to have given the book one-star ratings on the book reviewing website Goodreads in recent days, with several accusing Gilbert of "romanticizing " Russia while living at a safe distance from the country's devastating war with Ukraine.

Maybe I should lay off /r/writing posters for a bit, published authors regularly beat them in cringe.

rdrama reads: Whitney Ryan's Black Future, Week 3:marseyparty:

Welcome back to our Black Future story hour, dramatards. We are on page 4 of this thrilling novella.

In a very surprising turn of events, neither of the guesses from last week were close to being correct. Next weekend's guess reward is thereby increased to 30 marseybux to whoever guesses reasonably close to the goings on of next week's page.

Here's a link to page 4, i dont want to upload the files locally :marseypirate2:

It takes a skilled writer to write such nuanced and intricate s*x scenes without delving into the outright pornographic. Once again Whitney proves herself a master of ambiance and detail.

@DrFateHoids

My prediction: Alex starts jerking off to the BBC on the screen

From now on the “what are you reading” threads will become bi-weekly to give more time to finish whatever books you're reading. To fill gaps we'll have bi-weekly “genre threads”, first genre is horror so you can discuss your favorite and least favorite authors, books and characters in horror literature as well as to post your recommendations :marseyexcited:

What's the most :marseysociety2: piece of fiction?

Helmer: You are talking like a child. You understand nothing about the society you live in.

Nora: No I don't... I must try to discover who is right, society or me.

Off the top of my head, there's Ted's favorite book, Conrad's The Secret Agent (which gets my vote, because he makes fun of Twitter anarchists for larping). There's all the angsty shit Dostoevsky wrote. There's Roth's American Pastoral, which, if anything, is anti-:marseyunabomber:. Then of course there's blue-pilled 1880s Norwegian feminism, or old-timey female Joker lit: Ibsen.

But what really is the angstiest piece of literature for edgy anarchists to read that's not shit? 1984 doesn't count, because Orwell was a boring socialist and it's peachy and redditty, unlike Brave New World. What Is to Be Done? doesn't count, because Nabokov and I say it's dreadful.

What would the gigabrained Joker actually carry under his arm as he assassinates John Lennon?

What are the books on your coffee table that you dont touch

Just curious what you frickos pretend to read.

Mine are

  • The Coming of Neo Feudalism by Joel Kotkin (Never read it, just have it so I can bring it up as a hailmary to force people out of my house if they over-stay)

  • War Diary of Yi Sun-sin (no reason except to prove my gook superiority over other gooks)

  • Meditations by Marcus Aurelius (I read 5 pages and called it a day and haven't opened it since 2016)

  • If on a Winter's Night a Traveler by Italo Calvino (/lit/ meme book I kinda like)

Might throw on Journey to the End of the Night by some Frenchman so I look fancy.

You read this when you are down.

You read this when you don't want to think.

You read this during tough times.

You read this during good times.

Experience this Masterpiece first hand.

7/5 stars would Invisibly read again.

2

Truly a masterpiece. After reading such a divine work, I have found true enlightenment. If God doesn't exist, then explain this masterpiece. Checkmate, atheists.

3

The greatest masterpiece I have most probably ever read. It's got everything required for a perfect novel. Even under pressure the author was able to bring such an epic story. I'm moved to tears. The grammar and writing was excellent. There were certain moments I had to reread certain parts to understand the profoundness of the text.

The Main character. The MC in this novel is too wonderful, maybe too complex. You'll shed tears when you reach the chapter/chapters where you'll learn his past. A tragic protagonist with a purpose in life. An important thing to note is that this novel does NOT have any kind of plot armor which makes it much more realistic.

The Romance. The romance was just lovely. The love triangle in this novel can be considered one of the best I have ever seen. Also the main female lead has a proper REASON to fall for the MC, unlike some other novels.

4

I cried... because I don't have even 0.1% of the talent of this autor... because this godly story hitted a soft spot of my heart... because love, hatred, hopelessness, joy and sadness, and even lack of understanding blend together in a sort if vortex which"ll litterally send you, on an adventure, along the fabulous Invisible Dragon !
